State schooled pupils and Oxbridge entry TVHE

In The Telegraph, Julia Hartley-Brewer claims that the low percentage of state-schooled pupils accepted by Oxford and Cambridge represents a failure of state schools. Her argument is that Oxford and Cambridge have high entry standards and independently-schooled pupils are far more likely to meet them, hence the strong representation of those pupils at the top institutions.

She’s partly right. She’s right that independently schooled pupils perform better at A-levels, on average. It’s also true that Oxford and Cambridge have very high entry standards, which favours independently-schooled pupils. However, that does not fully explain the low rate of admission for state-schooled pupils.

It’s fairly easy to check because the percentage of state-schooled pupils admitted is one of the Performance Indicators published by HESA each year for all universities. The indicators helpfully include a benchmark that accounts for, among other things, the entry qualifications of students. That means we can compare the actual state-schooled intake for each university against a benchmark that takes Ms Hartley-Brewer’s concerns into account, along with other considerations, such as age, ethnicity and sex.

The chart below shows that we would not expect Oxford and Cambridge to take a high proportion of state-schooled pupils, largely because of their high entry requirements. However, even against that adjusted benchmark, they underperform.

Star Wars (Dec 2015) coNZervative

1450393070063I’m not a huge Star Wars fan I have to stay, despite being a Dr Who, Matrix general sci fi, epic fantasy groupie. It’s a bit ‘Disney in Space’ for me (which it actually is these days Disney bought out LucasFilm).

Several friends have been to see the movie and I read the excellent TIME magazine interview with the producer/director so will go to see it and write a review.

For now:

Bouquets:  most people enjoyed it.

They really liked the ‘feel’ with the old movie (I guess we all agree the recent ones have been a bit too slick too much CGI and lacking soul).

The trend in movies seems to be working back to models and live filming and less CGI.  A good trend.

It’s long (2 hours) but it flys by as really good entertainment.

Brickbats: one friend felt the characters were too thinly developed and would have liked more back story.  I guess this is now spread more thinly across several movies and we allow for trilogies DVD box sets and franchise story loops.

Pedantry: Tie-Fighters still bank left in a vacuum. But we all love that screeching sound (which we also should not be able to hear in a vacuum).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - My Spoiler-Filled Review New Zealand Conservative

See if this sounds familiar to you.

The movie opens with a pitched battle between rebels and the 'Empire'. One of the rebels, knowing they are going to be captured, hides data that the rebellion desperately needs in a droid unit (that communicates by beeps and whistles). The rebel is caught and interrogated by the evil dark-clad, helmeted, leader who wields the dark side of the Force.

Meanwhile the droid with the data escapes into the wilderness of a desert world, only to be found by a young person who does not know they have untapped power in the Force, who goes off on a mission to return the droid to the rebellion and who is helped by a scruffy Corellian and his Wookie sidekick.

Oh, and there's a Death Star that has to be destroyed before it can destroy the world on which the rebels are located. But only after a small ground force disables the shield.

You could be forgiven if you think this sounds an awful lot like the first Star Wars (A New Hope), with elements of Return of the Jedi. It is only after I got home and thought about it that I recognized the similarities. It is basically a remake of the older Star Wars insofar as the basic plot goes. Sure there are new characters and situations, but it seems an awful lot like Stars Wars: Rebooted, or revisited.

Did I enjoy it? Sure, for the most part. It was great to see the old characters. Han, Chewie, Leia and (for a small moment), Lu...

Speaking the Unspeakable: Why the Establishment Wants to Silence Donald Trump, by SAM HUSSEINI THE OCEANIA SAKER

Sam offers below a fresh perspective on how there could still be hope left in the most unlikeliest of places, the police state of America.

After all, the country still claims to be a democracy so why not call it out on that? At the very least it advances the debate beyond the goebbelsesque headlines being pumped out of the “media”. The establishment has always fed off hate at every turn and the common man is manipulated, isolated and disenfranchised.

300+ million Americans are being “informed” by 6 media companies on what they should eat, drink, write, think, see, accept, vote and well you get the picture. Anything that leads to a distortion in a false reality – which promotes endless war – is positive.

Sam has done a great job at bringing a viable solution to the table, check out his excellent initiative at

What Happened To Confidentiality? No Minister

The Australian Tax Office has released the names of fifteen hundred large companies which paid no income tax last year.

Adolf wants to know why they were named.  The release of this information is disgraceful.  If they had said fifteen hundred of the countries largest companies paid no tax that might just have been OK.  It seems the ATO wants Australians to think these companies are bad guys.

However, there is no suggestion these companies have engaged in tax evasion.  (The writer of the article seem unable to discern the difference between avoidance and evasion.)  Just a populist slur to curry favour with the ignorant ferals who don't understand that if you make no profit you don't pay tax.

Of course, the intelligent reader will draw the correct conclusion.  The companies are operating within the law and the ATO is simply dead set useless at identifying tax evasion.

When you dig down into the article you find the following gems:

"“Some of these foreign owned companies are overly aggressive in the way they structure their operations.  We will continue to challenge the more aggressive arrangements to show that we are resolute about ensuring companies are not unreasonably playing on the edge. If they do, they can expect to be challenged.”"
This looks to me like code for 'we haven't been able to get any court decisions to go our way.'

Mining companies, which are battling the hangover from the resources boom, and foreign-owned finance companies still carrying the wounds of the global financial crisis were the most likely to pay no tax.  However, the data also showed some companies in...

Russia Lies - Boris Schumatsky New Zealand Conservative

Peasant kissing a soldier of the "Army of Liberation" on a Soviet propaganda poster issued after the joint Nazi-Soviet invasion of Poland.

A while back I tweeted the link below as a means to have a way of storing and sharing important pieces of information. After tweeting for a while, I've found that Twitter is not a good way of accessing stored information, that the blog does this far better.

So here is Russia is a Lie, by Boris Schumatsky. It's important to keep what you read in mind whenever Russia says anything. So many people whom I thought would have known better have been taken in by Putin because they trust what they are reading.

The greatest difficulty in dealing with Russia is this: Russia lies. This blanket assertion sounds like a slogan from the Cold War, and yet it's the only one that does justice to reality. ... Today not only do I write that the country of my birth has become an empire of lies, but that Russia itself is a lie.

...only one thing matters: who is strong enough to impose his truth on his opponent. Putin actually has nothing against NATO, he had initially wanted to join it himself. Now he only claims the right to do the same as all big players of geopolitics in his opinion do, the right to betray and murder. Vladimir Putin and his fo...

No Room at the Xmas Conservative Inn coNZervative

We all know Colin Craig made the Conservative Party an ‘ex’ party (o.oo% in the last four polls) because he couldn’t let go and would not face his colleagues over serious allegations against him. He wanted to hold John Key to account but couldn’t walk his talk himself.
We now also know that Craig was all-along the notorious ‘Mr X’ redefining ‘fairness’ and ‘transparency’ in NZ politics by pretending to be someone else and perpetrating a scam on the NZ public party and media via direct mail.
Continuing this alphabetic ex theme it seems the Party too is to have a Christ-less ‘X’-Mas this year.  It fits. There was no room for my wife and I (paid-up party members) at the Auckland AGM-Inn. We were not allowed Inn.  So we had to be evicted by the Police after being trespassed by a Craig employee who fed false information to the police (may have to follow up on that).  Seems there is no room at the Conservative Inn for opinion or discussion either.  “Shut up with all this anti-Titanic talk about ice bergs! You’ll cause us to sink!
An ex-Board member of the Conservative Party and a supportive colleague alerted me to the fact Whaleoil ran a story a few days ago about the Party’s adoption of the Susan Devoy impotent de-religification of our most Holy Day (Holiday) CHRIST MASS.

Finally it's the end of the line for the NZL (Wellington) born, disgraced Australian Labor Party MP, Craig Thomson, ordered to anti up AUD 485,000 for the misuse of funds during his time as head of the scandal plagued the Health Services Union.    The HSU represented the bottom end workers in the industry.   Thomson ripped off the most vulnerable in order to indulge his lifestyle.

On Monday the Federal Court ordered him to pay $80,050 to the Fair Work Commission covering the misappropriation of union funds for personal use including several visits to brothels; to pay $231,243 to the HSU in compensation plus another $146,937 in interest.

Thomson was the Federal Member for Dobell and Gillard and the ALP stood by him through thick and thin because he was their majority in Parliament.   He narrowly avoided being sent to jail last year after successfully appealing a decision in the Magistrates Court.   Instead he was fined $25,000 on a charge of theft.

The Australian union movement has a long history of corruption.  Back in NZL the union movement is far more fragmented and I suspect the opportunities for corruption are not so great as in Oz ... but?
